Express Entry

EXPRESS ENTRY

Express Entry is Canada’s most popular economic immigration system, designed to streamline the process for skilled workers and professionals to obtain permanent residency. Introduced in 2015 by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Express Entry aims to select and invite individuals with the skills, experience, and qualifications needed to contribute to Canada’s economy.  The points distribution is dynamic and strongly aligned with the current labour market needs. This system allows eligible candidates to apply for permanent residency through one of three federal immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).

Skilled Immigration Programs (Express Entry)

Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW)

The FSW program is designed for individuals with foreign work experience who meet certain criteria, including a minimum score on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Eligible candidates are assessed based on factors such as age, education, work experience, language proficiency, and adaptability. This program is ideal for skilled professionals and workers who wish to become permanent residents of Canada.

Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

The FSTP is tailored for individuals with experience in a skilled trade. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in their trade and meet language and work experience requirements. This program is a great option for those in trades such as construction, carpentry, manufacturing, and transportation, and who want to live and work in Canada permanently.

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

The CEC program is for individuals who have already gained skilled work experience in Canada. This program is designed to help temporary foreign workers or international graduates transition to permanent residency. Applicants need to have at least one year of work experience in a skilled occupation in Canada within the last three years.

Processing Time and How Express Entry Works

The Express Entry process is relatively fast, with most applications processed within six months after receiving an invitation to apply (ITA). The system is highly competitive, as candidates are ranked against each other based on their CRS scores, which are updated regularly. Candidates with the highest scores are invited to apply for permanent residency through regular draws conducted by the IRCC.

By using Express Entry, applicants can benefit from a transparent, efficient, and quick pathway to becoming a permanent resident of Canada. Whether you are a skilled worker, trade professional, or have Canadian work experience, Express Entry offers an opportunity to join the diverse and thriving Canadian workforce.

Tips for a strong Express Entry Profile

Apply Early for a Higher Human Capital Ranking
The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) awards the highest points for candidates aged between 20 and 29. Applying within this age range increases your chances of being selected for permanent residency.

A higher level of education

Obtaining a higher level of education with the necessary Canadian equivalency will also enable you to earn more points.

Adding Partner

Be sure to include your spouse if you are married, as your profile’s points may vary based on your marital status. Your Express Entry profile can earn additional points for your partner’s “core human capital” factors, such as work experience and language proficiency.
