Canada a destination for immigrants
Undeniably, Canada has continued to be one of the preferred destinations for international students, workers and immigrants who simply want to call it home. Fortunately, or unfortunately, it is the alternative to American dream. This thinking has increasingly been changing. It could probably be because outsiders are not able to distinguish Canada from the US. Simply put, it is ignorance. Interestingly Canada’s immigration system encourages economic growth and multiculturalism, which is an intrinsic part of Canadian society. Most Canadians are likely to think immigration essential to Canada’s economic prosperity and overall growth. The thinking here is far from ‘outsiders coming and taking our jobs away’. With around 37 million in population, Canada is all geared to increase that number. There are several reasons that may contribute to the growing population. Let us look at few of the classic ones:
- Multiculturalism– Unable to quote the source but sometime back a senior academician pointed out that in Canada it is regarded as patriotic to support immigration and multiculturalism. In the time we are living in, that remark stands out. Be it accepting 25000 Syrian refugees to having half of the cabinet with representatives of colour, today’s Canada does not hesitate to carry out bold experiments with multiculturalism. A Canadian is simply not defined by ethnicity, skin colour, sexual orientation or by an individual’s language, religion, or economic background. In a greater sense what matters is a shared set of values, aspirations, hopes and dreams that not just Canadians but people and the world share.
- Immigration system– Millions of immigrants can vouch for the fact that Canada has one of the fairest points-based immigration systems in the world. The federal government offers an array of programs and categories for eligible candidates simply based on merit. Primarily there are three pathways to immigrate to Canada: A) Economic Class B) Family Class and C) Refugee class. The Economic Class is highly promoted by the government and different favourable programs are launched quite often. Even during Covid-19 when the world was still going through a health crisis, humanitarian in certain parts, Canada continued with its immigration plans.
- Climate Consciousness– The conversation around the environment and living compels one to think consciously about heritage, environment, and preservation. These changes or adoption are not sudden and continue very much to be the Canadian way of living. Taking care of the environment is part of human nature. There had been many initiatives taken to lower the carbon footprints and move closer to recycled or reused concepts of lifestyle. An example would be “Putting a price on the habits of the people. Canada has one the cleanest electricity system in the world due to its share of clean, non-emitting electricity. This initiative would not have succeeded if it were the sole responsibility of the government. It is not. Canadians are getting educated and taking every step as possible to lead a conscious lifestyle. It is not hard to find an average Canadian today who is trying to reduce waste and recycle more.
- Health care -All residents are able to benefit from Canada’s universal healthcare system. One does not have to pay for most health-care services. The universal health-care system is paid for through taxes. When you use public health-care services, you must show your health insurance card to the hospital or medical clinic. Each province and territory have their own health insurance plan. Make sure you know what your plan covers. In some special scenarios for Refugees, Refugee claimants or Protected Persons there is provision for temporary health coverage including dependents.
- Acceptance of diversity– Canada undoubtedly is a remarkably diverse nation. The LGBT community like many other countries in the world is still a work in progress yet it is fairly represented in the Canadian society. As per the Gay Travel Index chart Canada is considered one of the most Gay friendly countries in the world. The social acceptance of the queer community in Canada is remarkably high and the country has witnessed major legal shifts in support of LGBT rights.
- Entrepreneurship– There is a huge support from the government for small business communities in different forms ranging from mentorship, training, incubating to funding. Some of the finest examples would be Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy, Interest‑free loans for small businesses and not‑for‑profits or for that matter CERS (Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy) The Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy has helped more than 5.3 million Canadians keep their jobs, and the Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy and Lockdown Support have helped more than 154,000 organizations with rent, mortgage, and other expenses. The wage subsidy, the rent subsidy, and Lockdown Support programs are currently set to expire in June 2021.
Overall Canada has a very structured points-based immigration system. With an immigration-friendly government in power, previous and current policies have proven to be encouraging for the suitable candidates. The economy is ever evolving with a huge number of job opportunities, excellent facilities for international students and various options leading to residency. Canada sure has all the checks to make it the most preferred destination for immigration.
